While cameras are designed to be used in the great outdoors, they are not immune to it. Over time, the temperature, air and humidity of the environment can take its toll. Which is why its important to insure it is protected to the best of its owners ability against the elements.

Protecting a camera against heat is a difficult task. You simply cannot control the temperature of the weather. But you can control the heat generated inside the camera.

One way to do this is by particularly switching off unnecessary functions. For instance, not using the LCD screen will cause the camera to not use as much electricity, thus generating less heat. Other features such as HD recording, battery packs and image sensors will generate a considerable amount of heat. These also often have the option of being switched off without losing the ability for the camera to take recordings.

Many cameras on the market keep a constant recording of what’s going on in their visual range. A constant feed.

A 24/7 recorded feed is great for the fact that you can be sure everything the camera sees is kept. But it can be an issue when sifting through footage to find the specific time the camera actually saw something you should be aware of.

A solution to this is to use motion cameras. As the name suggests, these cameras will only start recording when it picks up movement within its visual range.

Another great advantage to motion cameras is that they are usually independent units. So they do not need to be connected to a computer or a power supply. Simply put the camera in a spot you consider a prime place for intruders, and come back to the camera after you suspect it may have picked something up.

The Disadvantages Of Using Fake Cameras

In the last post we looked at the advantages of using fake cameras, but are there any disadvantages to this security strategy?

Obviously the first glaring disadvantage is that fake cameras provide no system of visual awareness like real cameras do. They do not make recordings of the environment and as such can’t be used to refer to when assessing the surrounding area, in real time or when referring to a recording.

Fake cameras provide a false sense of security

While fake cameras are a comparatively cheap deterrent against criminals, instilling a sense of defence against them. They also instil a false sense of security in the owners. It can be easy to look up at your own fake security system each day and to rest easy in the notion that they protect your premises, but they do not.

This is a problem that can run deeper than you might expect. A false sense of security will allow you to pay less attention than you otherwise would on your security. Attention that should really not be misplaced.

The Advantages Of Using Fake Cameras

It’s impossible for a criminal to tell if a security camera is real or not, so why bother installing real ones?

It may be risky, but using fake cameras saves money and still acts as a deterrent against criminals and vandals.

Obviously you don’t have the protection of a visual recording and real time surveillance. But you also don’t to stay up all night watching the cameras, or pay a security guard to do the job, simply put the fake cameras up and you have 24/7 protection with no running costs.

Saving money on cameras will allow you put the extra funds into the critical, final defences of the security infrastructure. This can be an effective strategy. The criminals who are deterred by the cameras will not approach the property, but the criminals who actually intend to rob the building will have to contend with the increased protection of the critical security systems.
